Twp. Zoning Ordinance |
Berlin Township Spring 2008 NewsletterFrom the Desk of Berlin Township Supervisor, Koleen McVeigh
From the desk of Berlin Township Supervisor. Hello Berlin Township residents, We had a busy 2007, and we are going to have a busier 2008. The sewer project for Berville is in phase 1 and the engineer has informed us phase 1 is almost complete. The St. Clair County Health Department has been working with the engineers and Berlin Township to complete the sewer project in an affordable and updated working system. WANTED: ADVISORY COMMITTEE for the sewer project. This committee will consist of Berville Residents who will be affected to this project. If you as a resident have any questions about this project and how it may affect you living in Berville please call during regular business hours. Any meetings will be posted at township and in Berlin Township minutes in Tri-City Times paper. The road tour with the St. Clair County Road Commission and Berlin Township took place on April 2. There will be 2080 tons of 21AA Limestone to be distributed in the township this year. There will be 2 applications of chloride this year, our roads are in good shape but they need a good grading. If anyone has questions or comments on the roads you need to call 1-800-999-9424, this will connect you to the St. Clair County Road Commission. They are in charge of all roads including ditches, culverts, maintenance, etc. Any match money Berlin Township gives the road commission is considered a donation of township funds to help with the financial cost so our roads stay as good as possible. The Township is not responsible for maintaining any roads or problems pertaining to roads. If there is a problem with a road and you notify the township we call the Road Commission. Berlin Township is a zoned community. You need to apply for building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits. To comply with set back requirement, Agricultural properties need to obtain a zoning permit. Agriculture buildings are exempt from building permits, they still need to obtain electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits. Burning permits can be acquired at the Township Hall during regular business hours. You need to have your signature on file once a year which extends from January to December each year. You need to be the property owner to receive a burning permit. Nice weather is right around the corner. And with that in mind our clean up day is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, 2008 from 7a.m. to 3p.m. The located will be at C&A, 426 North Ave. in Berville. Tires will be taken for a nominal fee, paid for by the resident. Tires need to be removed from lawn mowers, bikes, or any other items with tires. Freezers and refrigerators will be accepted with the Freon taken out and tagged stating Freon is removed, this is required. You do need identification that proves you are a resident to participate in this event. This is for Berlin Township residents only. Always remember, anything being put in the Road Right of Way, permit(s) must be obtained by the St. Clair County Road Commission. You call them at 1-800-999-9424.

From the Desk of Township ClerkKaren Klos I’m so glad that the warmer weather is on its way
back! Our community continues to be a very busy place even with the
economy the way it is. It’s sad to see so many vacant homes – I look
forward to seeing them occupied as our economy begins to grow again. There are so many new things going on with elections, and the rules seem to change almost on a daily basis (as do the possible dates for the elections). I am preparing for the upcoming school election on May 6th and have this information to share with you: For those of you who vote in the Capac School District, your polling place has been changed to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Hall at 109 E. Kempf Court (the entrance is on Walker Street). Absentee ballots will be available from Mussey Township (810-395-4915). For those of you who vote in the Almont and Armada School Districts, you will vote at the Berlin Township Senior Center on Capac Road (next to the Fire Hall). Absentee ballot applications will be available from Berlin Township, CSB Bank (Capac and Allenton locations), the Senior Center (during senior activities), and at the Allenton Post Office. Just fill out the form (be sure to sign it in two places), mail it to the township, and we will mail you your ballot as soon as we can process the necessary paperwork. The Capac ballot will have: Four (4) candidates running for two open School Board positions for a four year term each, one (1) candidate running for one open School Board position for a two year partial term, and an “Operating Millage Proposal”. The Almont ballot will have: Five (5) candidates running for two open School Board positions and an “Operation Millage Proposition”. The Armada ballot will have: Three (3) candidates running for two open School Board positions. The next elections will be the Presidential Primary on August 5th and the Presidential General election on November 4th. All Berlin Township voters will vote at the Senior Center for both of these elections. I remind all of you that will go to the polls to vote, the polls are open from 7am – 8pm on Election Day. You are considered to be on time as long as you are in line by 8pm – you will not be turned away. As always, if you have questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to call. Better yet, come and attend a Township Board Meeting and see us in action. Meetings are on the second Monday of each month at 7:30pm at the Township Hall. Karen A. Klos, Clerk
From the Desk of Berlin Township TreasurerMadeline Parks The 2007 tax season has come and gone with good results. I would like to extend a big “thank-you” to the people at CSB Bank for assisting me in collecting taxes for Berlin Township residents. The 2008 tax season will begin on July 1st. You have five options in getting your taxes paid on-time: I will have scheduled collecting hours at the township hall (see your tax bill), I will have a “drop box” outside my office for walk-ins coming in to the township hall at times other than my scheduled time, there is an “after hours” drop box in the front door of the township hall, CSB Bank will still collect them at all their locations, or you can mail them to me (they must be postmarked by the due date). If you defer your Summer taxes, please be sure to pick up a form and return it to me before September 14th. Please note that on your tax bill there is no longer an “Administration fee” – this fee was removed a couple of years ago in an effort to save you a few dollars. With that noted, please help us keep expenses down by including a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your payment if you require a receipt (otherwise, your cancelled check is your receipt). Berlin Township now charges $2.00 for duplicate bills. If you have a mortgage company and don’t want to pay the fee please contact them to see if you can get a copy of your tax bill. If you pay your own property taxes and need another copy for your income taxes you will also be asked to pay the duplicate fee. During non-tax season, my scheduled hours are Thursdays from 9am to Noon. I do make a point to stop in regularly to check my mail, return calls, and to take care of any other day-to-day matters. Please feel free to leave messages for me at any time – I will return your calls as soon as I can. If there is anything more I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to call. Madeline Parks, Treasurer

From the Desk of the Township Assessor
Reassessing has been finished with the agricultural, commercial and industrial properties. We have moved into the residential areas of our assessing endeavors now, so if anyone has concerns please call the township hall at 586-784-9969 between 3:30 – 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Our assessing department is sending people out to measure. They will have identification and will let all property owners know they are there and what they are doing. To get a true value and not an estimated amount, cooperation is appreciated and crucial for the reassessing process. This task will take a couple more years to complete.
Parks and Recreation Next commission meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16th at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held at the Park near the Senior Center and Fire Station on Capac Rd. Anyone interested in volunteering for this committee is welcome to attend.

Berlin Township, Things To Remember Burning permits are required in Berlin Township. Call Township hall if you have any questions. Burn permits are available at the Berlin Township Hall free of charge. You must fill out the proper paperwork for a permit. It is good for four days and you may extend it by calling Township Hall. — It is illegal to burn building materials in Michigan, this includes 2x4's.
